Hearts Fall

© Karyn Ellis

When I first met you I fell in completely.
I thought you were forever, dear. Thought we would make babies.
And we’d live in a big house just outside the city.
And, I’d write you love songs while you tell me that I’m witty.

And Hearts Fall like Night, at the end of each day.
But love like starlight fades away.

How can two people live lives so entwined
For over two years, dear. And still be such strangers.
And you’re like a traffic light in a downtown intersection.
Or like the skin of a bubble, your face keeps on changing.

And Hearts Fall like Night, at the end of each day.
But love like starlight fades away.

It’s not that I wanted nor needed your attention.
It’s just I thought my lover might show a little more affection.
And you’re like an airplane at the boarding gate; I’m in line at the check in.
But I can’t carry this on, dear–though I’ll miss the connection.

And Hearts Fall like Night, at the end of each day.
But love like starlight fades away.

How can two people live lives so entwined
For over two years, dear. And end up such strangers.

Do-do-do-do-do.
Do-do-do-do-do.
Do-do-do-do-do.
