About the record...On May 21, 2008 I stepped into Don Kerr's studio with myself, my guitar and ten or so sketches of songs and a vague sonic idea to start what I thought was going to be a nice little follow up to my last album Hearts Fall. I had no idea the extent of the trip was I was embarking on in Don's cozy basement studio last May. I knew of Don through mutual friends (he produced my friend Claire Jenkins' lovely record, Crow's Nest/ Nid de Pie; he & his partner were also was in the same pre-natal group as my good friends). I heard he was pretty cool. When we took on this project a year and a half ago he & I were strangers, and we entered into what has turned into be perhaps the most detailed, expansive, musical, gratifying and organic/creative process I have worked on in my life. And let me tell you the rumours are true -- Don Kerr is VERY cool! Over the course of the recording process EVEN THOUGH THE SKY WAS FALLING has become a minor epic, if I may say so myself!! In addition to good old drums, bass, guitar & pianos there are orchestral horns (arranged by Brian Kobayakawa), strings (arranged by me and Don), glockenspeil, choirs, lush electric guitar, hand claps & snaps and the concertina. This record has moved well beyond one little singer-songwriter gal (me) to incorporate over two dozen players/singers contributing to the project not to mention a giggly toddler's choir on Beauty. (Curious who plays on the record? Click here.) I believe this is a sweet but powerful album, speaking of the small wonders that make life worth living. "Beauty begs of us", goes the song Beauty "embrace the wonder...though it be coy. Beauty begs of us that we be filled with joy." I say all this, flaky as it sounds, because it's not so much about me anymore. The songs have asserted themselves, and many many people have shaped the album during the recording process. I am deeply moved, and deeply proud to be helming this record with Don. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much I enjoyed making it. xo karyn |
